Beyond the Aperture Launched

This week, I was able to both finish something that’s a long time coming, and start a new journey — simultaneously: I launched Beyond the Aperture.

BTA (because who does’t love meaningless acronyms?) replaces my previous site, QueryBang. I started the latter years ago to be a vehicle for my technology writing, and for a time, it was pretty successful as blogs go. “Tech” is a pretty broad, pretty limitless topic, and there was always something to write about, but it also made it tough to focus. Then, I got back into film photography, and everything changed.

It also became glaringly evident that it didn’t fit very well against everything else I was writing about. And then there was the fact I stopped writing about everything else. Suddenly, the name QueryBang, and all my old articles, just didn’t fit — even after I shifted focus and removed all the technology content. A new name and a new look was required for that, and for exploring all the other ideas I have as I continue to be practically intoxicated with film, film cameras, lenses, and everything else that comes with the territory.

Beyond the Aperture is designed to be a resource for film photography. I’ll be continuing to focus on in-depth, comprehensive reviews of cameras, film and accessories. I have a lot of educational material that I’m actively working on. And I intend to add some timely news and information where that makes sense. The aim is to bring something a little different to table, a unique spin on the subject we’re no doubt both passionate about if you’re reading this right now: film photography.

In the process, I hope to discover the past (when most of our cameras were made), and make it relevant to the present (a world in which digital may be king, but film still has a place).

All the old content on film photography has been brought forward, cleaned-up, recategorized, and retagged so it’ll be easier to find things. You’ll see newer material shown right when you come in the front door, and you can access articles by search or browsing the menu.

I hope you enjoy what you find here. Much more is to come.

Finally, you’ll find BTA on social media as ApertureBeyond on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, where we’re just getting started. Give us a follow; I’d love to follow you back and see what you are doing with film.
